Before we start with anything, you should know that it wasn't until the 1840s when the Alabama Department of Corrections was founded. Before the 1840s, you should note that the state of Alabama did not have any sort of prison system for those who broke the law within the state.

As of late, the Department of Corrections employs over 3,400 people throughout the state. These 3,400 people oversee ensuring the safety and rights of over 26,000 offenders within facilities all over the state. These offenders range from low security to maximum security.
