The formation of the Idaho Department of Corrections started in Idaho City and Lewiston, Idaho. This all started in the year of 1864. It was thanks to a regional official who was assigned to design and handle two of these city correctional buildings and turn them into what is now known as a state correctional building.
During the next decade, these facilities would be home to over 100 inmates and stay in operation for many years after that. Most of the inmates would be brought and kept in the Idaho City location.
It would not be until the early 1900s when the Idaho City facility location would soon crumble and fall into the Elk Spring due to all the gold diggers digging around the facility.
