The Department of Corrections in the lovely state of Iowa is the agency responsible for imprisoning offenders inside one of the many facilities that they operate. However, the DOC is also liable for various other correctional methods as well.
The Iowa Department of Corrections will always try and use the state facilities as the last resort for their rehabilitation process. They will always use probation or parole methods first, dependent on his or her crimes.
For example, if an inmate comes in the DOC with a non-violent crime, he or she may get probation rather than being sent to one of the many state facilities in the great state of Iowa.
You should also note that the DOC in Iowa will also be responsible for the individuals who are on post-trial supervision, which is either probation, house arrest, or parole. All these individuals will be set up with one of the many officers that work for the DOC in various offices in the state.
