Warm Springs Treament & Change Program is a facility that is operated by the Montana State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It is a maximum security prison for men and houses over 140 inmates. The facility is located in Warm Springs, Montana, and the prison can get extremely cold, leading to the facility earning the nickname “Montana’s Little Siberia” due to the isolation of Warm Springs and the climate. It is the third oldest prison in Montana, and there are somewhere around 1000 guards at the facility. It is also the largest maximum security prison in the state.
The facility also housed the Montana state death row male inmates up until 2008, as well. The prison was actually built in 1844, and was created so that prisoners can supply labor to local mines. In 1899, a mental health hospital was built on the premises as well, called the Warm Springs State Hospital. The hospital was meant to serve those who were going insane during their sentences.
There are many various well-known individuals that have served time at Warm Springs Treament & Change Program. There is also a garment shop at the facility, as well.
In addition, two individuals escaped from Warm Springs Treament & Change Program in 2015. This became the subject of a show, “Escape from Warm Springs”. The seven-episode series premiered in 2018, and has won various awards.
