High Desert State Prison NV is a facility that is operated by the Nevada State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It is a maximum security prison for men and houses over 4176 inmates. The facility is located in Indian Springs, Nevada, and the prison can get extremely cold, leading to the facility earning the nickname “Nevada’s Little Siberia” due to the isolation of Indian Springs and the climate. It is the third oldest prison in Nevada, and there are somewhere around 1000 guards at the facility. It is also the largest maximum security prison in the state.
The facility also housed the Nevada state death row male inmates up until 2008, as well. The prison was actually built in 1844, and was created so that prisoners can supply labor to local mines. In 1899, a mental health hospital was built on the premises as well, called the Indian Springs State Hospital. The hospital was meant to serve those who were going insane during their sentences.
There are many various well-known individuals that have served time at High Desert State Prison NV. There is also a garment shop at the facility, as well.
In addition, two individuals escaped from High Desert State Prison NV in 2015. This became the subject of a show, “Escape from Indian Springs”. The seven-episode series premiered in 2018, and has won various awards.
