Arizona State Prison Complex Lewis – Morey Unit is a facility that is operated by the Arizona State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. It is a maximum security prison for men. The facility is located in Buckeye, Arizona, and the prison can get extremely cold, leading to the facility earning the nickname “Arizona’s Little Siberia” due to the isolation of Buckeye and the climate. It is the third oldest prison in Arizona, and there are somewhere around 1000 guards at the facility. It is also the largest maximum security prison in the state.
The facility also housed the Arizona state death row male inmates up until 2008, as well. The prison was actually built in 1844, and was created so that prisoners can supply labor to local mines. In 1899, a mental health hospital was built on the premises as well, called the Buckeye State Hospital. The hospital was meant to serve those who were going insane during their sentences.
